You aren't running at 1600x1200 are you? I used to use that resolution and had the same problem, needed my glasses to read it at all. There are a few options in the game menu to change font width and size as well as options to the top of the chat...

I am finding pvp in various lowsec belts, and I expect it to improve as the number of targets I have a chance of beating will increase with my skills. I like systems with lots of belts and few to no stations.

I came to eve wanting to be a bounty hunter, within about 30 mins of being in game I had been told it was a waste of time so turned to piracy instead. I bet I am not alone in this.
